What Do I Do With My Hands During a Newborn Session?

One of the most common things I hear from parents during their newborn session is:

“What do I do with my hands?”

The good news? You don’t need to have the answer. That’s what I’m here for!

As a newborn and family photographer serving Horseheads, Elmira, Corning, and the surrounding Finger Lakes region of New York, I guide parents through every step of their session so they never have to worry about how to pose, where to look, or what to do with their hands.

Most of my clients are simply parents wanting to preserve this fleeting season with their new baby—not professional models—and my goal is to create a relaxed, stress-free experience that results in beautiful, natural images of your family.

Focus on Your Baby, Not the Camera

The most beautiful newborn images happen when parents focus on their baby instead of worrying about posing perfectly.

During your session, I’ll guide you every step of the way, so there’s never any need to wonder what to do next.

Instead, focus on loving on your little one—holding their tiny fingers, pulling them in close for a cuddle, brushing their wispy hair back, or resting your hand gently on their back.

These simple interactions create natural, meaningful images that capture the connection you share and tell the story of this fleeting season.

Your Hands Help Show Their Size

One of the most powerful ways to remember how tiny your newborn was is through the way you hold them.

The way you cradle their little head in your hands, hold their feet, or wrap your arms around them, it creates a beautiful reminder of just how small they were during those first few weeks.

These images often become parents’ favorites because they capture something that changes far too quickly—the tiny details that won’t stay tiny for long.

Embrace Connection

Your hands often play an important role in creating connection within an image.

During your session, you may find yourself cradling your baby’s head, holding their tiny feet, wrapping your arms around your family, or resting a hand on your partner’s shoulder. These simple gestures help tell the story of love, comfort, and connection during this special season of life.

The most meaningful images are often created in these quiet moments—when you’re simply holding your baby close and soaking in all the little details you never want to forget.

Poses Don’t Need To Be Perfect

One of my favorite things about newborn photography is that it isn’t about perfection.

Your baby doesn’t care if your hand placement is perfect, and years from now, neither will you.

What you’ll remember is the feeling of holding them when they were tiny enough to fit in your arms, the weight of them on your chest, and the way their little fingers wrapped around yours.

Those genuine moments are what make your images meaningful—and they matter so much more than a perfectly posed hand.

Let Me Do the Guiding

When you book a newborn session with me, you don’t have to worry about posing at all.

I’ll gently guide you throughout the session, making small adjustments when needed and helping create images that feel natural, connected, and true to your family.

Your only job is to soak in these precious moments with your baby.

I’ll take care of the rest.
